The article is based on the materials of the regular seminars "Embedded Systems: PromisingSolutions for the Critical Tasks and Harsh Operating Conditions" and is dedicatedto the CompactPCI and PXI systems. Also discussed are the fundamental principlesof construction and architecture of the systems of these standards. The article offers,as an example, a brief overview of the relevant products from ADLINK specifyingtheir potential applications. Particular attention focuses on the 3U format products.

They combine various intrinsically safe typesand provide communication with the control systems located in a safe area.Also included is a brief description of the main components of the FieldConnex® system:field barrier modules, segment protectors and discrete input/output modules.

The article covers the typical Ethernet redundancy methods implemented in the industrial switchesto improve the data transfer efficiency. Also discussed are the advantages and disadvantagesof the individual technologies as well as the issues concerning their common use in the mixednetworks.

Experience of the integrated automation of the high-speed ships

The article describes the problems occurred when designing automatic systemsfor high-speed ships. The paper provides the main ways to solve these problems throughthe example of an integrated automation system jointly developed by LLC Agat Design Bureauand NPK LENPROMAVTOMATIKA. The system has been introduced in a high-speed passengership and sea multipurpose boat.

A universal console controller based on the cPCI and VME bus

The article presents the principles of modular architecture of the universal console controllersfor the marine automated radioelectronic systems for various applications utilizing advancedcomputing facilities. Also described is a universal console control enclosure designed by JSCConcern "Granit-Elektron" and CC SPC "Aquamarine". The paper provides examplesof the implementation of the console control devices with the multiprocessor systemsbased on the cPCI bus.

Automatic control system of a compressor station

The article provides a brief description of one of the commercial products manufactured by CJSCElcus - a set of instruments to control a compressor station. The product was developed in 2005.It is now being delivered on commercial terms to the naval ships under construction.

Model tests in a towing tank are the most effective way for studying the hydrodynamicand aerodynamic properties of the modern types of ships. The article discusses the specificfeatures of the automated data acquisition and processing system for a high-speed towing tankat the Institute of Hydromechanics NAS of Ukraine.

The article describes the control system of a unit for the protective coating for jet aircraft turbineblades. Also discussed are the benefits of the automation of the unit and the needfor the unification of the hardware/software solutions to allow for its replication.Particular emphasis is given to the implementation of the upper level of the systembased on GENESIS32 SCADA components.

The article describes the experience of designing a stand for testing pulse detonation engines.Also discussed are the architecture and functions of the stand and the capabilitiesof the employed hardware and software devices.

Distributed control of unmanned aerial vehicles

For the past several years, students and faculty at the Vehicle Dynamics Lab (VDL)of the University of California, Berkeley, have been developing a system of coordinated distributedcontrol, communications, and vision-based control among a group of several unmanned aircraft.The control system for each aircraft runs on a PC/104 computer with a QNX 6 operating system.Control is divided into three kinds of processes: communication, image processing,and task control. All of these processes interact through Cascade DataHub.

Missile simulation systems

The article provides a brief description of a hardware-software complex of a missile simulationsystem illustrated by the example of a specific development. Missile simulation systemsare designed for checking airborne missile test and readiness systems and training flightpersonnel. The systems are capable of eliminating the necessity of using expensive operationalmissiles at these stages.

The article describes a highly efficient universal multiprocessing system designed for solvingthe application computing tasks requiring the parallel organization of calculations.The system is based on the nodes with the Intel Core micro architecture processors,and the nodes are connected with Infiniband, a high-speed real-time interconnect.
